Danika Ethier to compete for Canada in Pan Am Junior Games

A 17 year-old Kapuskasing swimmer has taken her love of the sport to the national and world stage. Danika Ethier will compete for Canada at the Pan American Junior Games in Hawaii in August after qualifying at the national trials in British Columbia last month. She credits family with getting her interested in swimming.

“So I started swimming at Donat Brousseau Pool and my sister and I were swimming because our babysitter introduced us to the sport,” she said. “But I think it’s really because of my sister – she started swimming and I thought that was interesting so I did it as well.”

Ethier says she participated in a few other sports growing up in Kapuskasing like skiing, volleyball and basketball, but swimming quickly became her sport. She realized that it was getting serious in the sport when she was qualifying for events like the provincials.

Ethier is expected to swim in the 200 metre and 800 metre breaststroke as well as some of the medley relays.

She adds that she hopes that her success will motivate other youth in Kapuskasing to pursue their dreams in sports.
