Nominations for municipal elections start Monday

It’s a confusing time of the year for politics. The writ for a provincial election is expected to be launched next week and at the same time nominations open Monday for municipal council and school board elections in the fall. Town of Kap Clerk Chantal Guillemette says it can be difficult for the novice politician to understand.

“I don’t want people thinking they can come here and see me if they want to nominate themselves for the provincial election cause that’s wrong,” she said. “Us it’s for the municipal election, so council, mayor and six councillors and also the four different school board trustees.”

Nominees for municipal elections have until August 19th to send in the required forms and payment. Guillemette says if you want to run for municipal council or mayor then you’ll need to get 25 signatures of support.

“These must come from qualifying and eligible voters in the municipality,” she said. “They have to submit those forms to us as well. There are also few check boxes to do for the campaigning, so we do issue a certificate for campaign expenses for each position.”

You can pick up a municipal election nomination packages at any town hall.
