English Catholic teachers blast Ford govt., want masks back in classrooms

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association wants the province to reinstate the mask mandate in schools.  It was lifted on the day classes resumed after March Break.

Renée Catt is OECTA unit president for schools from Moosonee to Cobalt. She says that was premature.

“Covid is not over,” she states. “Let’s be frank, COVID-19 is not over and after a March Break where we know that there’s  lot of people travelling and visiting other people in other areas, that the trend is after a holiday such as that, that the spread tends to increase.”

The government doesn’t release that information, but Catt notes that its Science Advisory Table and wastewater testing results point to that as fact.

OECTA accuses Doug Ford’s government of going to great lengths to conceal the actual rate of spread of COVID-19.

“From the get-go, the government failed to put in robust testing and sharing of that information,” Catt explains. “And then since then, they have completely removed all of that information being shared or even collected at the school level.”

Catt adds that anecdotally at least, schools are experiencing unprecedented absentee levels since the mask mandate was removed.
