Minister takes a shot at NDP MPP’s highway safety bill

It appears the Ford Government is choosing party politics over improving highways in the north.

During his visit to Kapuskasing earlier this week, Northern Development Mines and Forestry Minister Greg Rickford says he has no intention to support NDP MPP Guy Bourgouin’s private members bill that would reclassify Highways 11 and 17 the same as the 400 series.

“Guy has voted against everything we have done in the legislature to make our road safer,” he said. “We’re taking action to ensure that our northern highways aren’t just safe places for people to travel but for industry to thrive.”

Rickford says Guy Bourgouin and the NDP failed to support the Ford Government on a number of important votes.

“We put those proposals before the legislature in the budget and unfortunately like the announcements we are making today, he has voted against,” he said.

However, there is support for Mushkegowuk-James Bay MPP Bourgouin’s bill from the Transportation Task Force as chairman Danny Whelan says his group would likely support it with a letter as part of their recommendations. The private members bill looking to make changes to northern highways including the reclassification the same the 400 series has gone to committee where it’s unknown whether it will stall out before a provincial election is called.
