On Monday, Roger Segouin, Mayor of Hearst and Alan Spacek, the Mayor of Kapuskasing met to discuss the Caribou Conservation Plan.
In essence the plan outlines a rough area, everything north of Highway 11 – including the Hearst Forest – being designated a protected Caribou habitat and cutting access to the Pagwa range which is vital to the continuance of forestry in the region.
Employees of the forestry community could be impacted on a large scale and could seriously threaten the entire industry in the region.
With the closing of the Cochrane biomass power plant which used forestry waste to create clean energy has already affected the forestry industry in the area.
Now with the possibility of the Caribou Conservation Plan being enacted the economic impact on the communities in the region could be catastrophic as this could also affect the Ring of Fire.
