The Town of Kap has started to keep an eye on the spring thaw and the potential flooding in the far north. Evacuation Advisory Committee chairman Pat Kennedy says he expects to see a report in the coming weeks that includes snowfall amounts in the bush and ice thickness on the major rivers.
“What’s nice about getting the report is that you can compare it to previous years,” he said. “We know which years were worse than others that’s when it’s kind of sharp so you can compare how thick the snow is compared to different years. It gives you an idea of what the flood possibilities look like.”
Kennedy says now that the food catering is set, the committee can look at hosting capacity limits after the easing of the COVID-19 health protocols.
“Filling up our hotels as much as we can to help them out,” he said. “We also want to help the communities in need, and provide support to the province in having a better hosting capacity.”
