Blacklisted! Putin targets MP from region

Faced with a growing number of international sanctions, Russian president Vladimir Putin has reacted partially by issuing a blacklist of 300 Canadians.  Among them is Timmins-James Bay New Democratic MP Charlie Angus.

“I was pretty gobsmacked when my daughter called me and said that Putin had put me on his blacklist,” he remarks.

Angus says the list is a sign of a bully getting desperate, as Canadian parliamentarians go after his billionaire oligarchs and economic power, while Putin’s taking a hit in Ukraine.

“He’s putting ordinary Canadians, parliamentarians, activists, people who speak up on some kind of blacklist,” Angus coments. “I wear that blacklist as a badge of honour.”

Angus isn’t exactly sure why he’s on the list. He speculates it’s because he suggested renaming the street in front of the Russian embassy in Ottawa after Ukrainian president Volodomyr Zelenskyy.

He expands on his belief that Putin is desperate, as he flails in the invadion of Ukraine.

“And I don’t think we should be intimidated. I don’t think people will be intimidated. Putin the strong man is now looking a bit more like Putin who’s very desperate and has really blown this horrific war that he’s caused.”

Angus sees his spot on the list as a badge of honour, and says he feels stronger to speak up for the Ukrainian people, for democracy, and for taking on an international criminal.

He and the rest of the 300 Canadians can not travel to or invest in Russia.
