A Smooth Rock Falls man has been fined $2,800 for illegally hunting a black bear.
Yves Thériault pleaded guilty to two charges laid by conservation officers: one of hunting big game that is swimming, for which he was fined $2,000; and hunting big game without a licence. That fine is $800.
Court heard that on August 26th, 2020, a bear wandered onto Thériault’s cottage property on Shackleton Lake, near Fauquier. Witnesses said he chased the bear into the lake and shot at it on land and in the water.
