News Cochrane Power Plant Closure SHARE ON: Gregory Rosser, contributor, Friday, Jun. 26th, 2015 Cochrane Mayor Peter Politis is fighting the province’s decision to close the town’s biomass power plant. The plant is responsible for taking in hundreds of thousands of tons of forestry waste and turning it into renewable energy. According to Mayor Politis the plant’s contract to produce power ended in May and the Province will be closing it indefinitely next month. The closure will put 33 workers out of a job and possibly affecting around 500 jobs in the neighbouring forestry plants. The concern is that the replacement solar power installation will cost considerably more than maintaining the plant says Politis. The closure could potentially affect the pulp mill here in town.
