Public meetings coming this spring on Mattagami River land use in Smooth Rock Falls

Public hearings could begin as early as this spring regarding a proposed 140 acre parcel of land on the Mattagami River in Smooth Rock Falls.  Mayor Sue Perras says the town bought the land located south of Highway 11 as part of its 20 year plan. She adds that the land is centrally located in the region.

“We’re on highway 11, we’re on the skidoo trail between Timmins, Kapuskasing Cochrane so perfect also for someone looking for a cottage on the river,” she said. “So it’s really a great asset for Smooth Rock and an attraction for us to have.”

Perras says the goal of purchasing the land at the time was future economic development in the community.

“We need more revenue so this would bring in more taxation,” she said.  “You know for us probably bring in more people and even it would bring in even if it’s weekenders that have a cottage.”

The study will examine what the property could be used for either cottages for houses. It’s hoped the Town of Smooth Rock Falls could have the study back by the end of the year.
