Kapuskasing Town council getting support from area communities for new Extendicare nursing home

Kapuskasing Town Council has received help from area communities in its fight for a new Extendicare nursing home. Mayor Dave Plourde says not only did a group from Kap meet with the Ministry of Long Term Care but so did groups of communities form Fauquier-Strickland to Opasatika. He adds that the situation last year at the Kapuskasing facility increased the importance of a new one.

“The Extendicare facility and the age of the facility, and the fact that we require a new updated facility with more beds in the community,” Plourde said. “We have a waiting list at times that can be upwards at 130 people waiting to get into the Extendicare or the manor for that matter.”

Plourde says the support from the area shows that everyone can work together. He adds that it’s been a mission of town council the last four years to get a new Extendicare for Kapuskasing and now the waiting game begins for a response from the province.

“The license for Extendicare is due to come up in 2025 so it’s really important that the new facility gets the nod sooner than later and I think that it’s long overdue,” he said.

Extendicare has sent a proposal to the province to redevelop and expand the Kapuskasing home from 60 beds to 128 beds.
