Fire destroys Le Kaprice Restaurant in Kapuskasing

UPDATE AT 3:45pm TUESDAY: Investigators with the OPP, Kap Fire Dept. and Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office have condluded that the fire is “non-suspicious”.

The Chief of the Kapuskasing Fire Department says they may know soon what caused a fire that destroyed Le Kaprice Restaurant on Lang Avenue on Sunday night. Pat Kennedy says the department got the call at about 10:45 that the building was engulfed in flames.

“The fire was stuck in the walls in the ceiling and it made it’s way up to the attic,” he said. “So we needed heavy equipment to help us expose and get to the fire. With the wind and cold conditions, unfortunately the fire spread throughout the building.”

Kennedy says the extreme cold weather and fires don’t mix well and can cause a lot of problems for the department.

“Like for an example this whole street is flooded,” he said. “It’s slippery where we walk. We had water close to our knees on the road. Nozzles we can shut them all the way off because they freeze and don’t work properly.”
