As cold as it’s been, Environment Canada has issued its first extreme cold warning of the year for the region we’re in.
Meteorologist Steve Flisfeder says the weather finally crossed the line into that territory.
“For Northeastern Ontario, our criteria is a wind child of -40,” he explains.
Those conditions are expected into early tomorrow, the result of a particularly cold air mass that originated in Siberia.
“It was travelling across the Prairies earlier this week through Northwestern Ontario and finally has settled over Northeastern Ontario for the past couple of days.”
The deep freeze will subside for the weekend. “Then early next week” Flisfeder notes, “we do see a return to those very cold temperatures and wind chills combined.”
Flisfeder advises us to heed the warning. Even if you think you’re used to the cold, it can be very damaging without the proper attire.
“Dress warm, don’t stay out too long if you don’t have to, and if you can stay indoors, all the better,” he says, also reminding us that our dogs and cats experience cold the same way we do.
