New business license bylaw coming to Kapuskasing in new year

The Town of Kap will have a new Business License Bylaw next month. Under the proposed new bylaw, commercial and home-based business registration fees will be waived for a third year in a row due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but will still need to register. That move the past two years has seen the town lose about $40,000 combined in revenue. Mayor Dave Plourde says he likes the new bylaw.

“It is something you know that is good for the Town of Kapuskasing, making sure that everyone in the community is registered including people in commercial spaces who are not registered,” he said. “It gives us a good idea of how many businesses are registered in our community and encouraging others to come.”

Plourde says he’s hopeful that MPAC will continue to track those businesses regarding their taxes.

“It’s really about capturing those taxes within the community that happens through MPAC (Municipal Property Assessment Corporation),” he said. “It’s really no huge change. It would be to make sure that everyone is paying for what their getting.”
