Tributes, memories for Smooth Rock Falls pioneer Reg Lamy

Tributes and fond memories are pouring into the community of Smooth Rock Falls following the death of a pioneer Reg (Rejean) Lamy at the age of 96 on November 30th.  He died in the long term care unit of the Smooth Rock Falls Hospital. Lamy was best known for being part of the Smooth Rock Falls Arena for many years, according to Mayor Sue Perras. She has fond memories of going to the arena as a child and seeing Lamy there.

“Reg was there every night, but that was not his main job,” she said. “His main job was working in the mill and the arena was a secondary job. He was there sharpening skates for people all around. If you got skate laces and couldn’t pay, he would let you have them and settle it up next time.”

In later years, the town of Smooth Rock Falls honoured his dedication by naming the arena after him.

Perras says Lamy was an important part of the community who was also known for being a people person.

“You could see him at almost every stag and doe because he would always be there, always buying a ticket, and showing up,” she said. “He even went to our truck fest and the Hedley concert. Everyone was rocking, his ears red and he would be in the back talking.”
