Cottager hydro rate change to be phased in over 10 years

Reported by Trevor Smith-Millar

The seasonal class for Hydro One users will be eliminated, but it will happen very slowly.

The Ontario Energy Board has decided to phase in a fixed charge over 10 years to change the seasonal rate into a residential pay rate. The long phase in time is to limit the increase on the bills of seasonal residents by no more than 10 percent. After ten years, the seasonal rate will be eliminated.

The Board took into account feedback from organizations like Federation of Ontario Cottagers, The Vulnerable Energy Consumer Coalitions, The Kamaniskeg Property Owners Association and several other Hydro One customers. In total, over 850 letters were accepted when the Board called for input back in October of 2020. The Board has said their input was part of the reason to change to a phased-in approach.

The increases will begin on January 1st, 2023.
