New owner for co-generation power plant in Kapuskasing

The co-generation power plant in Kapuskasing is getting a new owner. Validus Power Corporation has purchased the plant as well as a North Bay location from Atlantic Power, and will turn them into power and data facilities. Mayor Dave Plourde says it’s a really good news story for Kapuskasing that could bring up to 30 high paying jobs to town.

“We are really happy to have them,” he said. “They’re looking at spending significant dollars in the plants in North Bay and in Kapuskasing over the next couple of years to bring them up to speed to today’s technology so to speak into those plants. So there’s lots of money being spent.”

Plourde says discussions began with Validus Power in August when company officials came to Kapuskasing and toured the facility.

“They’ve indicated to us that they’ve commenced hiring of staff for the facility,” he said. “We just offered our help in anything they require whether it was lobbying efforts or anything they require to get the plant up and running.”

Five years ago Atlantic Power shelved the plant cutting several jobs in Kapuskasing.
