Legion members learn about programs available to help veterans

Taking better care of our veterans during the post COVID-19 pandemic was on the minds of members of the Royal Canadian Legion in the north during a workshop in Kapuskasing on Saturday. Legion members learned about how to help veterans apply for poppy funds and disability benefits through Veterans Affairs Canada. Legion Provincial Service Officer Sherry Culling says the organization offers a number of programs to help seniors who may have experienced financial hardships.

“And we have what we call operation leave the streets behind, homeless veterans’ program or near homeless veterans, and we can help them with their first and last months rent,” she said. “We can buy food, fuel, clothing for them, medical supplies. If they need that as well.”

Culling says a lot veterans don’t know that there are programs available help them especially now if they’ve experienced hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are here to assist anyone who has served in the military including allied veterans,” she said. “Our service is free, my office is in North Bay and there is a branch service officer who makes referrals to my office.

Culling says Legion members can also help with financial assistance through the poppy funds, as well as helping to fill out information on the disability programs through veterans’ affairs.
