Kap Town Council takes a moment to remember Nicole Guertin

The north and Kapusaksing lost a true promoter of our tourism yesterday. Nicole Guertin died from an illness at the age of 58. Kapuskasing Mayor Dave Plourde saluted Guertin prior to last night’s council meeting, and later acknowledged her significant contributions to the region.

“Nicole is very close with us,” he said. “We worked very closely when I first got on council some 27 years ago. She was a spokesperson for the community, spokesperson for Kapuskasing and quite frankly northern Ontario.”

Plourde recalled Nicole’s passion about helping northerners have a different perspective about sharing their lifestyle with others.

“A lot of the tourism aspects of our community,” he said. “The stuff the pre-stuff that we don’t see that outsiders would enjoy that was her ability to really recognize those things.”

Guertin was involved in the start-up of The L-Horizon-The Weekender, the first bilingual newspaper in the region. She later relocated to the Temiskaming Shores, Cobalt-Haileybury area where she was involved in a tourism-based business.
