Kap Rotary Club hiking trails have unique community names

The Kapuskasing Rotary Club has taken a uniquely local approach to naming its hiking trails in the community. Club member Robyn Bassari says two sections of the trails were named with help of the late James Croteau….Lovers Lane and of course James Way.

“We had this one section in between and threw some names around and the two that stuck obviously were TK Jewell and Dorothy Wynne,” she said. “We couldn’t decide between either of them so we cut the section in two and able to honour both of them.”

There are 5.55 kilometres of hiking trails that begin at water’s edge of Riverside Park, and include portions of streets and conclude around the Kimberly Drive area.  Special ceremonies to dedicate the naming of the trails began late last month and will conclude this Sunday with James Way. The dedication events have included short talks about each featured trail followed by a hike of the particular segment.

Bassari says the trails have become a hit, and credits the hard work of not only Rotarians but others who have lent a hand.

“We also have a lot of trail angels that are not part of the rotary club or the trail directly but they’ve been working really hard in adding different elements along the trails which we are proud to show off as well,” she said.
