Carol Hughes ready to get back to work in riding

Carol Hughes says she is looking forward to getting back to work as Member of Parliament for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing. The New Democrat won her fifth term yesterday in the Federal Election defeating her nearest opponent by nearly 5,000 votes. She says one of the issues she heard on the campaign trail in this region was housing.

“In Hearst and Kapuskasing area some of it is affordable housing units for seniors, for low income people – others its housing units just for workers coming into the area,” she said.

It was a much different campaign for voters and for candidates in this year’s Federal Election due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She says that in a normal situation there is lots celebration, but this year due to the pandemic it was much different.

“I watched the results come in with my family in a lounge at a hotel here in Elliot Lake,” she said. “Then I went to spend some time with the campaign team in the campaign office — the small campaign team that we had here.”
