Arena and Curling Club upgrades underway, more to come next spring and summer

Renovations have started to the Sports Palace in Kapuskasing. A $450,000 grant is covering the cost of the upgrades that include north rink wall repair where the team benches are located. Recreation Director Marc Clavelle says the low ‘E’ ceiling and new roof at the Curling Club will have to wait.

“Obviously too late in the season for the arena ceiling, but the curling club roof, I just spoke to the suppliers and it’s just too long to get material,” he said. “They can’t get it this fall so it will go to the spring.”

Clavelle says skaters won’t notice much difference with repairs to the wall. He adds that the problem arises when crews make ice in the fall and gaps are created along the boards. It causes them to lose water and ice making takes longer than expected.

He says the low ‘E’ ceiling will help the arena save money.

“We’ve had trouble with ice freezing at times certain times of the year with the equipment and that,” he said. “So this will just give us more capacity to do a better job in the whole year with the ice keeping it colder, keeping it at temperature we would want it at.”
