Sacred Fire ceremony underway until Sunday at Kapuskasing’s Riverside Park

A sacred fire ceremony is underway until Sunday at Kapuskasing’s Riverside Park. The Unity in Action Community Committee organized the ceremony that features food, children’s activities, drum making, and dancing. Elder Peter Sackaney says it was an honour to be part of the official opening yesterday.

“To witness what took place here yesterday for the MP, the MPP, the mayor coming out to address the people that came out in attendance,” he said. “It’s part of educating the public of what took place in residential schools.”

Sackaney says ceremonies are important part of the healing and educational process.

“And I think that should be brought into the system to the education to the younger people in schools as part of history,” he said. “I think it is very important that we do as people getting back what we lost.”

You are invited to attend just bring along a chair or a blanket, as well as some snacks and a music instrument.
