Family offers insight into incident in Timmins that killed father, two children

The motive of the father who drove his vehicle into Little Pearl Lake in Timmins last Friday with his two children inside is becoming clearer.

Timmins Police say they were alive before going into the lake.

“It is believed that the three individuals died after the vehicle submerged in the water,” Timmins Police Insp. Darren Dinel told media today.

The results of autopsies on 42-year-old Julian Ottoson, his 11-year-old son Simon and 7-year-old daughter Isabella are not yet available.

“It is clear that this was an intentional act in which the father is directly responsible for the deaths of the two young persons,” Dinel states.

In a written statement, the Ottoson family says Julian was suffering Huntington’s Disease.  He lost his wife to cancer two years ago,  and struggled with knowing the children stood the chance of losing him and inheriting both diseases.

“This does not excuse his actions, but hopefully it helps explain the unexplainable,” the statement reads.
