Medical officer of health urges COVID-19 vaccination before school starts

This region’s medical officer of health says it’s “incredibly important” for your tweens and teens to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before school starts.

Vaccinations are available for youth aged 12 to 17. Dr. Lianne Catton notes that it’s becoming urgent, with in-class learning resuming in six weeks.

“This week is the time to get first doses done, so that students can have both doses in order to be protected for a return to school,” she states.

Right now, 55 percent of people in that age group have one dose. Thirty-six percent have two.

Catton is also looking forward to the day when kids under 12 can be inoculated.

“You know, we’ve seen a lot of cases under the age of 12 and we know there’s a lot of people that are really anxious to move forward with this,” the MOH remarks. “These children likewise deserve a return to school with reduced risk for COVID-1. So we’re hopeful we’ll hear about that sometime in the fall.”

Tomorrow (Wed.) night, the Porcupine Health Unit is offering an online forum for parents and students about vaccination.
