‘Quilts for Survivors’ attracting interest from as far away as Norway

A Timmins woman is spearheading a project to provide quilts to comfort Indian residential school survivors.

Vanessa Génier is doing it through a Facebook group called “Quilts for Survivors”. It’s partly a tribute to her great-grandparents, who were sent to the schools.

“The original idea was to get 215 blocks plus one so that I can make 18 quilts,” she says. “And I was going to send them to each province and then each territory.”

The passionate quilter’s request for blocks to assemble into quilts has met with such good response, she has extended her deadline by two months.

“I said ‘well, I’ll just go to Thanksgiving,’ so Oct. 11 is a soft deadline. I mean if people keep sending blocks, I’m just going to keep putting them together and finding survivors to give them to.”

“Quilts for Survivors” has attracted donations of money, quilt blocks and full quilts from Mexico, the U.S. and Norway, as well as fabric shops across our region.
