Growth spurt happening in the Model Town

There’s a lot of hustle and bustle going on in Kapuskasing recently. Between a boom in the housing market with property being sold quickly to job opportunities in a number of areas including the mill, Kapuskasing could be changing the population figure of about 8,600 in the near future. Mayor Dave Plourde says it’s great to see the direction the community is headed in.

“It’s really what you strive for,” he said. “If you would have asked me that two years ago if we would have seen that I’m not sure if I would have said that and moving this fast. It’s incredible. It’s encouraging and we are looking forward to it actually.”

Plourde says the COVID-19 pandemic may have sped up the growth with people looking to relocate up north either to retire or work from home.

“Housing is at an all time high and I don’t think we have had that type of housing boom in all of the time I have been on council, certainly and long before,” he said. “It’s great to see and I think it is the way of the future. All of our neighbouring communities are seeing the same thing.”

He adds that the future in the province is in the North with people taking advantage of what the region has to offer.
