Ontario Power Generation announces Smoky Falls project could start this September

Another major construction project is coming to the Kapuskasing area.

Ontario Power Generation told Kap Town Council last night that preliminary plans are underway to fix up Smoky Falls Generating Station located about an hour north of town. The project would repair three sluice gates and close down seven others that are no longer needed. It’s part of the province’s plan to help economic recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The total cost of the project is more than $200 million and it’s hopeful that it could start as early as September of this year depending on the approval process and be completed by 2023 or 2024. OPG officials say 100 construction jobs would be created that’s additional to those working currently at the Little Long dam safety project.
