One ice surface at Sports Palace closed for season due to Provincial lockdown

Kapuskasing Town Council has decided to eliminate a sheet of ice at the Sports Palace. Mayor Dave Plourde says it’s a dilemma that many town councils are facing during the lockdown. He adds it’s an unfortunate decision but it’s costly to run both sheets of ice.

“Anywhere between 8 and 10 thousand dollars each ice surface to keep running over a period of time of not being used,” he said. “It’s certainly something we had to visit.”

Plourde says it’s not been easy on everyone.

“It’s really just trying to keep up and anticipate with what the happenings are and how we can best accommodate the population and the users that use the facility,” he said. “We want to have everything up and running but for obvious reasons that’s certainly not an option.”

It’s not known whether the province will extend or amend the current lockdown that is set to expire next Thursday. Town staff says that announcement will help decide how long the North rink will remain open either through March, April or longer.
