Kapuskasing and Smooth Rock Falls Legions receive federal government funding

The Royal Canadian Legion in Kapuskasing is getting some much needed funding from the federal government’s pandemic emergency fund. Branch President Donna Todd says they will receive $10,845 to help them cover the costs incurred from being closed during the COVID-19 pandemic back in the spring.

“For our electrical, our heat, hydro, for our main bills we have throughout the year,” she said. “Without this, it would be touch and go for the Legion.”

Todd welcomes the funding but hopes this is just the beginning.

“More is still pending but we’re open as of the moment and we will be shutting down for the little break,” she said. “We are requesting donations as much as possible as it does help the veterans in our area.”

Smooth Rock Falls Legion received 9,200 while Hearst is expected to get money in January. The funding for Kapuskasing and Smooth Rock Falls was part of the $14 million that was distributed to various branches across the country. The Legion in Kapuskasing re-opened its doors in mid-September.
