General Motors decides not to use Kap airport for testing this year

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the Town of Kap with another unexpected loss in revenue this year. General Motors won’t be using the Kapuskasing Airport for the cold weather testing. Mayor Dave Plourde says it will mean a loss of about $60,000 in revenue they won’t be able to recuperate.

“Well that it’s just that we have already maxed out what we can recuperate so this is an amount that we put in just as a tally of losses of a municipality during Covid-19 but we have certainly maxed out the grant we have received.”

Over the last three years GM has paid between 64 and 68 thousand dollars to the town to use its airport runways and garage.

Plourde says the pandemic hasn’t made it easy on municipalities.

“One of many different cutbacks we’re seeing all around and I think it’s to be anticipated. They’ve told us this is very temporary in nature and didn’t say forever. This is a one-time thing they will certainly review and revisit next year.”
