Cochrane DSSAB officials and town council working together to help plight of the homeless in Kapuskasing

The head of the Cochrane District Social Services Area Board hopes to continue to work with the Kapuskasing Town Council to address the homeless issues in the community. Brian Marks says Kapuskasing’s homeless dilemma isn’t critical enough where an emergency shelter is needed, but services must be better coordinated to help those who are in trouble.

“A lot of it is hidden, you know you have couch surfers and you have people who don’t have a home,” Marks said. “But how do we serve them? How do we find them and how do we make sure they get what they need? And when I say get what they need, I’m not just talking about housing right, housing is just one piece that Cochrane DSSAB does well.”

Marks says people don’t choose to be homeless and it’s unfair to judge them for the decisions they make.

“If we spend our time judging, then we are spending our time helping,” he said. “It’s important that with our political decision makers that they understand the issues and help make the decisions that DSSAB needs to help deliver our services.”

Both members of council and Cochrane DSSAB officials were encouraged by the meeting last week and looking forward to further discussions.
