Mayor would like to see new rest area in Kapuskasing near river

When the province announced recently that it wanted to expand the number of rest areas across Northern Ontario, the mayor Kapuskasing thought his community would make a great fit. Dave Plourde says more and more people are opting for roadside stops.

“In some cases especially during COVID, people are packing their own lunches and doing road stops, you know in anticipation of next summer and summers to come,” he said. “One thing we do have in Kapuskasing, is a beautiful river and we are built around that beautiful river.”

Plourde says he thought it was important to contact the province about how Kapuskasing can be on that list to be the home of a new rest area attracting tourists on a regular basis who may want to stop and check out what the community has to offer.

Two rest areas are being fix up and expanded west of Hearst while a new one is being built near the junction of Highway 11 and 655 near Cochrane.
