Think pink in October to support breast cancer, hospital seeing patients for breast cancer screenings

With so much focus on COVID-19, it’s hard to believe but it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Most hospitals including Sensenbrenner Hospital in Kapuskasing are not holding events this year due to the pandemic. Mammography Technologist Melissa Marien says there is bright side to all of this that they are slowly seeing patients again.

“We have been stopped for five months, and we are now providing the breast cancer screening mammograms,” she said. “So we do have a backlog, we do have a lot of patients waiting a little longer for the mammograms, but we are pushing through and we are seeing patients.”

Marien offers a few helpful tips to those headed to appointments.

“Wash your hands, fill out the paperwork at the front, and we also ask that everyone wears a mask when they come in the hospital,” she said. “If you are booked for a screening mammogram, and you develop any cold symptoms prior to your appointment then we ask you to kindly reschedule your appointment so we can get someone in your spot.”
