Hearst mayor wants province to extend Calstock Power Plant deal through to next year

Municipal Officials, and businesses leaders in Hearst are looking for help from the province regarding the future of the Calstock Power Plant. A deal with Atlantic Power will conclude at the end of the year throwing 25 people out of out work plus ending numerous spin-off jobs. Hearst Mayor Roger Sigouin says a new deal is needed through the end of the next year.

“We would like to see Premier Ford extend for sure at least while the pandemic is going to be on,” he said. “We need to see what we are going to do with the plant, the environment and with the wood waste.”

Sigouin says a deal like this affects everyone.

“Because it’s not only Atlantic power and it’s not only the community, it’s all of the industry,” he said. “We’re nervous we know the government. It’s not only about Hearst, but the rest of the biomass plan and energy.”

The Calstock Power Plant produces energy from wood waste.
