Fort Hope evacuees departed Kapuskasing on Thursday

Evacuees from the northern community of Fort Hope went back home yesterday after spending just about two weeks in Kapuskasing due to a forest fire that was close to their home. Kapuskasing Mayor Dave Plourde says the host of the evacuees went very smoothly in the new location.

“For the number of evacuees that we hosted, certainly, but if it was more than that than we would have to reconfigure everything just based on the fact that COVID is something that we have to manage,” Plourde said. “I think it was perfect for the size of the evacuation that we hosted.”

Two hotels west of Kapuskasing were used to host about 105 evacuees. The new location was used to isolate both sets of communities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
