Evacuees arrive in Kapuskasing and in Timmins

There are some special visitors in our region today. More than 250 Evacuees from Eabametoong First Nation also known as Fort Hope, arrived yesterday due to a forest fire southwest of their community. There are 105 people staying in Kapuskasing, while another 150 are in Timmins.

Earlier this week Kapuskasing Town Council approved changes to its evacuation plan that eliminated the need for an emergency, topped the number of evacuees at 200 and kept them in one location on the west side of town.

Eabametoong First Nation has a population of about 2,800 and is located north of Geraldton. Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry fire crews are fighting the blaze in that region. The evacuees are expected to be in the communities for up to 10 days.
