Area municipal leaders thrilled with Province’s funding announcement

Municipal officials in our area received some welcomed good news yesterday when the Province announced up to four billion dollars in one-time assistance funding to ease financial burdens caused during the pandemic. Timmins Deputy Mayor Andrew Marks says the announcement will be a huge benefit to everyone.

“We are going to be able to go to the Provincial Government and recuperate some of the revenues that were lost,” he said. “It’s going to help our overall budget this year.”

Marks says this will help their public transit.

“The city of Timmins subsidizes our transit system anyway to run so we are never in a profit situation,” he said. “Without be able to collect any revenues at all, it’s really affected our bottom line for transit so this is really a good thing for that.”

The Province says municipalities will be able to use the funding over the next eight months, and further details on specific amounts will be announced in the coming weeks.
