Mining sector and economy gets major boost with go ahead of Gogama mining construction project

There are plenty of smiles in the Timmins area today following the announcement that the Gogama gold mine construction project will proceed. IAMGOLD was given the go- ahead for the site that’s located halfway between Timmins and Sudbury and 20 kilometres southwest of Gogama. Timmins EDC CEO Christy Marinig says says this is welcomed good news for the economy especially what’s happened with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are hopeful that a lot of people from the Timmins area will be successful in getting some of these jobs, as well as our suppliers who will be able to sell their goods and services to this mine that has a life of over 20 years,” she said.

Marinig is hopeful that this is just the beginning.

“It is very important,” she said.  “We are hopeful that this is just the beginning and that it will dry more people to our region to look for these highly paid jobs.”

The project will create about 1,200 construction jobs and nearly 500 full time jobs once the gold mine is operating. The open pit mine could be producing gold for the next 20 years.
