Medical officer of health relying on honour system for public mask wearing

We’re a week away from mandatory face masks in enclosed public spaces.

In a media conference call, Porcupine Health Unit medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton addressed the question of why now?  Why not earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic?

She says one reason is that evidence has evolved.

“We need to follow and keep evolving, as the evidence evolves, as the context evolves with any type of novel virus such as COVID-19,” says the MOH.

Catton acknowledges that the pandemic’s evolution has been challenging to public health, politicians, governments and everyone else.

It’s up to you whether you comply with the mask order.

Catton says she’s asking workplaces and community members to implement the measure in good faith.

“We want to work on an honour system and trust that individuals will take the measures that they can to use a mask or face covering if they’re able to and try to prevent the risk of spread to others and help contribute to the reduced risk for all community members,” she remarks.

A scarf or bandana is acceptable, as long it covers your nose, mouth and chin, and doesn’t have any gaping.
