Rally against racism event in Kapuskasing draws about 40 people

Approximately 40 people participated in the rally against racism the Blake Lives Matters Kapuskasing march on Saturday at the Welcome Centre. Participants showed up with signs and then paused for just over eight minutes of silence to remember those who lost their lives due to racism. The group then walked the loop in the community before ending at the Gazebo in Riverside Park. Organizer Crystal Peltonen-Dostie was thrilled with the turnout.

“I’m not going to lie to you, I didn’t expect this type of a turnout for the rally today,” she said. “I didn’t think that my word wasn’t going to be spread like it was. My mind is blow away at what took place today.”

Crystal Peltonen-Dostie hopes that this rally will change people’s minds about race.

“If they are perhaps racist or have any type of racial discrimination in them, then I hope they change their perspective on things,” she said. “They learn to appreciate that skin colour doesn’t define us.”

Similar rallies took place in Cochrane and Timmins in recent weeks.
