Regional COVID-19 testing rate above provincial average, says MOH

The testing rate for COVID-19 by the Porcupine Health Unit is higher than the provincial average. Medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton says it has been for some time.

She says the region experienced a decrease in the rate as the weather improved, and the number of cases decreased.  On the other hand, there was an increase in demand when the province opened up testing to anyone who thinks they might have been exposed to the virus.

Catton expects the high testing rate to continue.

“For number one, those that have symptoms or may have been exposed and then making sure that everyone who is concerned that they may have been exposed or are asymptomatic as well have access to testing,” Catton outlines.

In Catton’s words, it’s “not unexpected” that there will be new cases of COVID-19 in this region.

She says the virus is likely still circulating, and the greatest risk is in not maintaining all the precautions we’ve become accustomed too.

Still, Catton thinks we’re moving in the right direction.

“We’ve been very fortunate that, I think, the measures have been successful, that people have been very committed to these measures which have led us to the point that we’ve had for the last month now, of not having new cases.”
