The Town of Hearst has taken over interment services and that’s cause rates to increase by as much as 10 per cent. No businesses came forward during the tender process that’s when the Town stepped in and took the service over. Town Council had been given three rate increases to consider, including one of 15 per cent before settling on the second option.
CAO Yves Morrissette says the community had among the lowest interment rates for a number of years.
“It’s unfortunate but I think residents had to take into consideration that the previous rates were extremely low,” he said. “It’s just a reality of the times with this increase.”
Morrissette noted that the rates the previous contractor was proposing were even higher than the municipal fees.
