Kapuskasing getting $2.8 million connecting link money for Government Road

There was some welcomed good news for Kapuskasing this week from the Province. The town will receive $2.8 million from the connecting link program for the construction of Government Road from LaSalle to Gurney Road. Mayor Dave Plourde says the town has about 7 km of the connecting link highway to take care of.

“I think it was 11 years ago when we got the last connecting link money,” he said. “That was to fix up the highway west of Kapuskasing to the airport. To receive that that kind of money to help fix up our roadways that are in dire need of help is a good thing.”

The Mayor says they want to get that stretch done before the 100th anniversary next year.

“It is imperative that we get this project out the door for tender as quick as we can,” he said. ‘That’s the way that council is looking at this, and we will see where it takes us. We are hopeful that things will open up slowly by the end of May, and we know that these tendering processes can be a bit lengthy so this should be okay.”

That project is expected to include water and sewer repair as well as the reduction of the incline of Government Road. Construction was completed last summer on the first part of Government Road which caused many traffic delays for motorists.
