UPDATE: PHU identifies retirement home in Timmins where COVID case lives

UPDATE: In a news release late Saturday afternoon, the Porcupine Health Unit revealed that Spruce Hill Lodge in South Porcupine is the retirement home where the patient in her 90s lives.

The count of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the region served by the Porcupine Health Unit is now 39.

The health unit reports that two were confirmed yesterday, both from tests done on Monday.

A man in his 60s was in contact with another case somewhere between Matheson and Smooth Rock Falls.  A woman in her 90s in Timmins is considered to have contracted the virus in the community.  Both are in self-isolation at home.

UPDATE:

FIRST CASE INVOLVING A RETIREMENT HOME RESIDENT

The woman in her 90 who’s identified as one of two new cases confirmed by the Porcupine Health Unit lives in a retirement home in Timmins.

Medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton will not yet disclose which retirement home.  She does acknowledge that that age group is one that all health units are working to protect from COVID-19, as is the home in question.

“We are working with this home to investigate the case and assist them in taking all the necessary steps to proect all their staff and their residents,” says the MOH.  “At this point in time, we ask for respect and privacy for those involved, including the home, while they work through their process to contact the families and staff involved, because really people should hear from them directly, prior to any public announcement.”
