BREAKING NEWS: First two COVID-19 deaths in region covered by Porcupine Health Unit

The Porcupine Health Unit is reporting the deaths of two women from COVID-19.  They are the first two patients to die of the virus in the area between Matheson, Hearst and Hornepayne , and between Timmins and the James Bay coast.

A woman in her 50s died in Lady Minto Hospital in Cochrane, just one day after testing positive for the coronavirus.  MICS hospital group CEO Paul Chatelain confirms it, saying everyone who works at the hospital is “deeply saddened”.

The other is a woman in her 60s who died in Timmins.  Her positive test came on Monday, March 23.

PHU medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton says in a news release that sharing such news “twice in one day is incredibly sad.”

She also says “This tragic loss highlights the seriousness of what is happening in our communities… We need to continue to work together to protect our families, neighbours, coworkers, and communities to limit the spread of COVID-19. Stay
home as much as possible. If you have to go out, practice physical distancing and keep at least two metres or six feet distance between yourself and others. “
