Don’t feel any pressure to pay for your groceries or other essentials only with a debit or credit card during the pandemic, and not cash.
In terms of spreading or contracting COVID-19, Porcupine Health Unit medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton says there’s really no difference.
“People can possibly get the COVID-19 infection from touching any infected object or surface.”
The potential problem comes when you touch your eyes, mouth or nose.
“The risks from handling money is no greater that touching any other commonly touched surfaces such as doorknobs and handrails, the debit machines themselves or any other items when we’re out in public,” Catton says.
“And the one concern with restricting the use of cash is that this can really impact some individuals and many individuals in our communities who depend on cash as a means for payment.”
