Kapuskasing won’t host evacuees due to COVID-19

Kapuskasing will not be hosting evacuees this spring. Fire Chief Pat Kennedy says the decision was made by Town Council not to be part of the evacuees program due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

“As long as we are in this pandemic the Hospital itself is in a crisis for caring for the residents let alone adding another 500 people to the community,” Kennedy said.

He’s unsure whether the early evacuations would be necessary this year.

“It will all depend on the flood threat and I would imagine that this year being a more milder year that it could be less,” he said. “I haven’t seen any stats this year on their snow or ice depths, but I think that will all come into play.”

Kennedy says First Nation communities have been studying alternatives of what to do with their residents should there be flood issues.
