Taxes and water bills on the rise in Hearst

Your taxes and water bills are going up in Hearst. Council approved a two per cent tax increase and a 3 per cent bump in water bills as part of the municipal budget. Chief Administrative Officer Yves Morrissette says they did their best to keep the rates affordable for residents, but realized that they were behind in what other communities were charging.

“We have had some major increases in the last three to four years,” he said. “There have been some five and even eight per cent increases, but this year we kept it down to just three per cent.”

Morrissette says the town’s has invested money in recent years to improve the aging infrastructure.

“Our infrastructure has aged dramatically in the last five years including our water treatment plant that is over 40 years old,” he said.
