Flyers set to host Great North Midget League Championship Tournament this weekend

Hockey fans are in for a treat this week. The Kapuskasing Flyers are hosting the Great North Midget Hockey League’s championship tournament at the Sports Palace. The puck drops Thursday at noon when the Flyers host the Timmins Majors. Flyers Head Coach Sheldon Reasbeck says it’s a long tournament and fitness will be critical.

“We need to make sure they are sleeping properly and timing their meals,” he said. “They need to be healthy for the whole week because it’s a lot of hockey.”

Reasbeck says there is no pressure but excitement to have the event in the model town.

“We are pumped to have the tournament at home and the crowds that we are going to have,” he said. “It’s going to be a great atmosphere in Kapuskasing this weekend and I’m sure the boys are going to feed off of it.”

It’s been an exciting regular season for the Flyers, hovering near the top of the standings. This is first time the league has gone to a tournament format, consisting of five round-robin games for each team. The top two advance to the championship game Sunday at 1 pm.
